STAGES OF FORMATION
NOVITIATE
POSTULANCY
TEMPORAL PROFESSION
Postulancy is the first formal stage of formation in religious life, during which a person who feels called to consecrated life lives within a religious community for a period of preparation and discernment. It helps the postulant deepen her relationship with God, understand the spirituality, mission, rules, and values of the congregation, and examine her vocation more seriously. During this stage, the postulant receives guidance from formators, participates in prayer and community activities, develops habits of discipline and responsibility, and learns to live in harmony with others.
Novitiate is a special and important stage of formation in religious life in which a candidate, called a novice, begins a deeper and more serious preparation for consecrated life. During this period, the novice lives in the religious community and learns more deeply about prayer, the Gospel, the spirituality and charism of the congregation, community living, the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience, and the Church’s teachings. With the guidance of the novice formator, she grows in self-knowledge, spiritual maturity, discipline, and love for God and others.
Temporal Profession is a stage of formation in religious life in which a religious makes her first formal vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience for a specific period of time. It follows the novitiate and marks the beginning of a deeper commitment to God and to the religious congregation. During this stage, the professed religious continues her spiritual, human, intellectual, and apostolic formation while living and working within the community.
